Regarding military discharges, and I may get some of this slightly wrong, but there basically 3 categories: “honorable”, “dishonorable”, and “other than honorable”. It is possible to just “quit”, if you do it right. You can’t just go AWOL, of course, but you can petition for a few types of “administrative” discharge, and those are all “OTH”. You do still lose your bennies, and you aren’t “dishonorably” discharged, but it is possible. One example would be hardship discharges: if you can convince your chain of command that your family is in dire straits without you there, then the military will likely discharge you with an “OTH”.
