It’s not weird that Pence calls his wife Mother.
After 4 kids, my parents call each ‘mother’ and ‘father’ (it’s less formal in Hebrew), even now, almost two decades after the youngest left the house. But they only do it in private. Not even in family gatherings.
What’s weird about Pence calling his wife Mother, is that we know about it.
“A poor man’s version of a rich man” is so spot on.
Notice that every time he brags about spending money, it’s an amount that an upper middle class family can withstand as an emergency. And every time he talks about actually large sums, it’s someone else’s money invested.
