    As someone who has diabetes, if I get to the point where I have to go to the ER but I don’t have medical coverage, the ER really can’t do anything for me. Every time I’ve been to the ER because of high blood sugars (which is what happens when you don’t get the insulin you need), they got me stabilized over the course of an hour or two and then immediately sent me up to ICU. Because “stabilized” is not another word for “better.” The ER can’t give a diabetic the round-the-clock care they need in order to get better. All they can do is stabilize you. Every time I had to go to the ER, I ended up staying in the ICU for anywhere from four days to a week. So yeah, I can to go the ER, but I’m going to have to go there every day, because the ER doesn’t make you better when you have a chronic condition like diabetes. They just get you to the point where you don’t need emergency care. Hence the name “Emergency Room.”
