Note that, not only does having a GED not mean one is stupid, is also doesn’t mean one is “bad at school”. In the 11th grade I was stuck in a little hick school in a tiny pissant town in Texas. I’d topped out on the available Math, Science, and English classes; that school had nothing more to offer me, and I had no reason to hang around another year; I was trying to get into college.

Guns: I know we’re not gonna take the guns away from cops, but I wish we could give them just one bullet they’d have to keep in their pocket, like Barney Fife.

I feel like Tom’s use of “bad at school” was closer to shorthand for “the student-school matchup didn’t work”. I, too, was a top student in a small town, football-driven school. I was bored and unmotivated while there. Didn’t mean I wasn’t good at school, just that I wasn’t good at THAT school because it wasn’t challenging me. At least, that’s the way I understood Tom’s remarks.
